The group gathered this time on the Northern Beaches, with Alicia and Loch hosting at their Collaroy Plateau setup – complete with an outdoor fireplace and a space well suited to a long evening.
The standout moment of the night: congratulations to Mark and Ri on the announcement of their baby, due November 2026. A huge moment and a great addition to the extended KWK circle.
Conversation, as expected, covered a wide spectrum. Steve and Martine arrived fresh off their final London Marathon long run (with strategic lifts), before Steve transitioned into a more horizontal recovery position – sun protection still required, courtesy of the hosts. Alicia shared an injury update – on track under a strict (and expensive) physio regime – while Loch continues to build strongly toward the HOKA Half.
Mark and Ri also provided a renovation update, with steady progress underway. Mark remains in temporary “on-site accommodation”, increasingly homely – though windows remain high on the priority list to reduce the risk of hypothermia during overnight stays.
Laura and Michal shared an update on their current living situation, with Lane Cove drawing mixed reactions – particularly from Loch, who confirmed he’d be comfortable driving under it, but not much more.
Catering was expertly handled by Alicia and Loch, backed by a strong cheese selection and Alicia’s now-signature pasties. Laura attempted to contribute dessert but was unable to deliver on the cake; a well-considered Plan B of scones – somewhat scone-adjacent in appearance – was deployed and, importantly, far better received.
On the whisky front, Oban 14 Years opened with its usual coastal balance – light smoke, citrus, and a subtle saline edge. Weller Special Reserve followed, bringing classic wheated softness – vanilla, honey, and an easy-drinking sweetness that disappeared quickly. The final pour, a customised Starward bottle (red wine barrel influence very much present), delivered richer fruit, spice, and a touch of tannin – carrying both sentiment and a slightly more assertive finish.
As the sun dropped and the temperature followed, the realities of an outdoor KWK set in. The evening closed with one underprepared attendee (no names required) sourcing a blanket – again courtesy of the hosts – confirming that planning remains optional, even for seasoned members.
Another strong showing, with momentum building toward a potential offsite KWK in Tasmania – or reconvening upon Steve and Martine’s return from their long service trip.
